Getting started · 5 min
Set up your terminal
Your Citizen Terminal arrives ready to go. Follow these steps to get it connected and take your first bank payment — it takes about five minutes.
Before you start
- A Wi-Fi network — or your phone's hotspot — that the terminal can connect to.
- Your Citizen Pay login details. Don't have an account yet? Create an account.
Unbox & power on
Take the terminal out of the box. Plug it in to power it on — or, if your terminal has a battery, press and hold the power button on the side until the screen lights up. The first time it boots, it will show the Citizen Pay welcome screen.
Connect to Wi-Fi
Tap Connect to Wi-Fi and pick your network from the list. Enter the password and tap Connect. No Wi-Fi at the counter? Turn on your phone's personal hotspot and select it instead — the terminal works the same way.
Activate your terminal
Your terminal is activated by linking it to one of your locations. A QR code appears on the terminal screen — scan it with your phone. It opens your Citizen Pay account, where you sign in and link the terminal to the location where it will be used. Once it's linked, the terminal is ready to take payments straight into your bank account.
Activate your payment methods
Before you can take payments, choose how you want to get paid — from your Citizen Pay account. Activate Open Banking by linking your bank account and completing a quick identity check (KYC); this is what lets money move straight from your customer's bank into yours. You can also activate payment methods offered by local initiatives in your area. Turn on either, or both.
Take your first payment
You're ready. Type the amount on the keypad and tap Charge. A one-time QR code appears on screen. Your customer scans it with their phone camera and approves the payment in their own banking app — with their face, fingerprint or PIN. The money lands in your account in seconds, and you see the confirmation right on the terminal.
Switch modes when you need to
The terminal has two modes. Use Normal mode for counter service, where you enter the amount. Switch to Kiosk mode during a rush and let customers pick their own items and pay themselves. Switch between them anytime from the settings menu.
Device settings
- Automatic updates
- The terminal is set to update itself automatically at 3am, so it always runs the latest version. You can change this time from the settings menu if it doesn't suit your opening hours.
- Protect settings with a PIN
- You can set a PIN on the device to protect its settings. Once it's set, the settings menu can only be opened with your PIN.
- Set stock for menu items
- You can set the stock amount for each menu item directly on the device, so it stays in line with what you actually have available.
Troubleshooting
- The terminal won't connect to Wi-Fi
- Double-check the password and make sure you're close enough to the router. If you're using a phone hotspot, confirm it's turned on and not out of data.
- The activation QR code won't scan
- Make sure the terminal screen is clean and bright, and hold your phone steady a few centimetres away. If it still won't scan, restart the terminal so a fresh code appears and try again.
- A customer's bank isn't supported
- We cover 1,800+ European banks. In the rare case a customer's bank isn't available, they can simply pay by card as normal.
